چکیده
Abstract We study how the asymmetric geometry of thrust faults affects dynamics supershear ruptures and their associated trailing Rayleigh as they interact with free surface, investigate resulting near‐field ground motions. Earthquakes are mimicked by propagating laboratory along a frictional interface 61° dip angle. Using an experimental technique that combines ultrahigh‐speed photography digital image correlation, we produce sequences full‐field evolving measurements particle displacements velocities. Our measurement capability allows us to confirm quantify asymmetry between motions hanging footwalls, larger velocity magnitudes occurring at wall. Interestingly, because motion wall is generally near‐vertical, while footwall direction shallower than angle fault, horizontal surface components found be The attenuation in distance from fault trace it more pronounced vertical component one. Measurements rotations experimentally interaction rupture can interpreted through torqueing mechanism leads reduction normal stress near for earthquakes. Nondimensional analysis shows consistent larger‐scale numerical simulations well field observations

Laboratory earthquakes along inhomogeneous faults: directionality and supershear.
We report on the experimental observation of spontaneously nucleated ruptures occurring on frictionally held bimaterial interfaces with small amounts of wave speed mismatch. Rupture is always found to be asymmetric bilateral. In one direction, rupture always propagates at the generalized Rayleigh wave speed, whereas in the opposite direction it is subshear or it transitions to supershear. The l...

Laboratory earthquakes: the sub-Rayleigh-to-supershear rupture transition.
We report on the experimental observation of spontaneously nucleated supershear rupture and on the visualization of sub-Rayleigh-to-supershear rupture transitions in frictionally held interfaces. The laboratory experiments mimic natural earthquakes. The results suggest that under certain conditions supershear rupture propagation can be facilitated during large earthquake events.

A certain class of surface motions, including those of a relativistic membrane minimizing the 3-dimensional volume swept out in Minkowski-space, is shown to be equivalent to 3-dimensional steady-state irrotational inviscid isentropic gas-dynamics. The SU(∞) Nahm equations turn out to correspond to motions where the time t at which the surface moves through the point ⇀ r is a harmonic function o...

Thrust fault earthquakes are studied in a laboratory earthquake setup previously used to investigate analog strike-slip seismic events. Dynamic mode II ruptures are generated along preexisting faults in an analog material, Homalite H-100, and their interaction with the free surface is studied for both sub-Rayleigh and supershear rupture speeds. High-speed digital photography and laser velocimet...
